HTA congratulates Oakland Unified School District for being awarded a Human Trafficking Youth Prevention Education grant from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families. At a time when both the commercial sexual exploitation and labor trafficking of children is on the rise in the East Bay, OUSD will partner with local non-profit MISSSEY to plan and deliver a human trafficking prevention education program to educators, other school staff, and students, and to develop and implement a Human Trafficking School Safety Protocol.
We are also excited about two recent grants obtained by Familias Unidas:
$98,000 in funding from Kaiser Permanente for the agency’s Trauma-Informed Care in Schools program for students and their families at Lovonya DeJean Middle School in Richmond.
$50,000 from the California Department of Health Care Services, to enhance the agency’s capacity to provide behavioral health services virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Detecting and Preventing Suicide Behavior, Ideation and Self-Harm in Youth in Contact with the Juvenile Justice System Purpose: This initiative supports research to test the effectiveness of combined strategies to both detect and intervene to reduce the risk of suicide behavior, suicide ideation, and non-suicidal self-harm by youth in contact with the juvenile justice system. Opportunities for detection and prevention start at early points of contact (e.g., police interaction, the intake interview) and continue through many juvenile justice settings (e.g., pre-trial detention, juvenile or family court activities, court disposition, placement and on-going care in either residential or multiple community settings.)
