HTA is a small, fast paced, mission and client-oriented consulting company, located in Berkeley, serving foundations, educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, collaboratives, cities and counties in the fields of education, social services, behavioral health, adult and juvenile justice, workforce development, and community change. The majority of our work focuses on low income communities of color around the Bay Area and across California. We are looking for a motivated, self-directed, and detail-oriented associate to join our team as a Grant Writer/Associate
Given the small size of our firm, this position offers the opportunity for hands-on engagement with multiple projects and for professional growth.
The associate is a full-time writer who is assigned to our grants team in order to complete successful federal, state, local, and foundation grant proposals. The associate is responsible for writing and overseeing the accurate and timely completion of highly competitive grant applications. This involves tasks such as: gathering need, asset, and other background data; facilitating meetings with clients, partners, and technical resources to support program design and complex budget development; managing client relations and tracking ongoing project management from start to finish of a project; writing and editing narratives; and completing other tasks specific to each proposal. The Associate will also work across teams to provide writing, editing, communications, planning, and ad-hoc support when needed.

Required Qualifications
- At least 4 years of experience in grant, technical and/or professional writing or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Excellent skills in written and oral English, and a knack for writing and editing
- Ability to quickly gain familiarity with a wide array of topical areas
- Ability to synthesize information quickly into coherent text
- Strong analytical ability and attention to detail is essential
- Comfortable leading meetings and group conversations. Experience with planning (strategic planning, business, planning, program planning, etc.) is a plus.
- Ability to interact dynamically, courteously, and professionally with clients and community in the field, online, and on the phone.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and guidelines
- Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and Google Suite,
- Ability to conduct secondary data, background, and other research on the internet
- Ability to work in collaboration with diverse client groups
- Budgeting skills – ability to construct complex, multi-year budgets in Excel
- Ability to work effectively in high-pressure, deadline driven environment
Additional Desirable Qualifications
- Significant work experience in or knowledge of in social service, policy, nonprofit or education sectors or a degree in social sciences, public health, or education.
- Extensive experience writing government (federal, state, county, city) grant proposals and contract bids
- Project management skills
- Familiarity with logic models and theories of change in social sciences a plus
- Experience with foundation grant writing
- Experience with diverse communities and populations
- Additional languages a plus
Logistics and Benefits
- This is a full-time, exempt position. We offer some flexibility in work hours: employees can flex their eight hour day around HTA’s core operating hours of 10 am to 4pm. Evening and weekend hours may be occasionally required depending on project/client needs.
- The grant writing associate will work in HTA’s office in Berkeley
- Starting salary up to $70k depending on experience.
- HTA pays $400/month towards employee’s health plans (Kaiser Permanente and Dental)
